P3 (sometimes called "P-cubed") was so named because each member's
name begins with the letter "P". Individually the members of P3 are all highly
professional musicians with a wide variety of experiences and backgrounds.
|
| |
The band got its start in early 2003 as a last-minute replacement
when the scheduled entertainment at the Coffee Mill, a Clayton, NC coffeehouse,
couldn't make it. |
| |
In concert, much of their material is improvisational. P3 has been
playing out steadily in the Triangle (NC) area, and has actually been known to
rehearse occasionally. |

Their first CD, "Just Made It Up" is available through either
Studio415 or Sprawling Productions. |

Expose' Issue # 28 USA
P3 is an improvising rock trio of
guitar, bass and drums, featuring two guys named Paul and another named Phil.
One of the three is Paul Kollar of "Subtle Matter" and St. Elmo's Fire fame,
and like the title suggests, the six tracks herein are on-the-spot spontaneous
compositions. The band follows a road that's already well traveled by bands
like Maximum Indifference, Djam Karet, Quarkspace and Escapade, and although
these pieces are claimed to be improvisations, they do indeed sound like
they've been rehearsed a time or two, to the point where at the very least a
direction and purpose seems to be clear, even if the exact path to that end is
not.
The sound leans a bit to the psychedelic side, where reverb
drenched effects and spirited soloing reign free, with touches of groove
fusion, funk and blues. Following a strong early 70's vibe, the band
features a heavy bass drive and powerful, soaring guitar work, with solid
drumming to hold it all together. It's a crowded field, but these guys do it
very well, and spend a lot more time airborne than a lot of their peers.
Overall, an outstanding first effort that should satisfy the appetite of those
hungry for a free-wheeling rock sound that finds it way easily through the
pitfalls and traps that can so often drag projects like this down. -Peter
